Because it is a slice of life in the Big Apple complete with sex and fashion!. The four women are basically stereotypes and it is interesting to eavesdrop on their conversation and watch their struggles to find the loves of their lives!. There are laughs and there are tears!.
Plus I learned alot from SATC!. I had never heard of half the sex stuff they discussed!. I feel the same way about other cable series like The Sopranos (learned about mob and Italian cooking), Big Love (learned about LDS and polygamy) and Weeds (learned about marijuana growing, dealing and smoking)!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Mostly because people in general are fascinated by sex!. The show is kind of a dirty pleasure because its the stuff you like to think about, but you don't want people to know you think about!. For a society obsessed with youth and living young, this series really enables women to see themselves as being able to live like the four characters do!. such as shopping at expensive boutiques, sleeping with young men, drama, etc!.
