Answers:
The Tardis console has instrumentation on it which can tell the Doctor what conditions are like outside the Tardis!. The composition of the atmosphere (whether it's breathable), the temperature and pressure, radiation levels, e!.t!.c!.
The Doctor wouldn't go outside, or let his companions go outside, if the conditions were too hostile to support life!.
The Tardis does have it's own force-field which protects it from attack, and can also protect the inhabitants when the doors are open (as seen in "The Runaway Bride")!. It can also be extended a short distance away from the Tardis if the Doctor or his companions have to go outside in a threatening situation (as seen in "Parting of the Ways")!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
