Why do some people think that Dateline's To Catch a Predator is entrapment?!

Question: In my understanding, entrapment is when the police coerce you into committing a crime you would not otherwise have commited. For example, if you offer to sell drugs to an undercover cop and the cop convinces you to get him a larger amount and then proceeds to arrest you for a more serious crime.

But in this case, the men charged have not been lured into doing anything. They messeged young girls and then spoke very graphically about sex to them. I think that establishes their intent. It's not like this people who pretend to be 12 year old seek them out and purposely talk dirty to them.

I guess it's because the Dateline people have put a damper on their hookup possibilities. They have to worry if they will get caught doing their pedophile nastiness so they just say "oh... its entrapment. It's not my fault"

I think that show is great! No one was forced to do anything they didn't want to do. The best part is when they have reasons why they went to the girl's house, like "I wanted to teach her a lesson" or "I just wanted to be nice." Sure buddy...

Simple rule of thumb when it comes to entrapment is "If it's something you would have done if we (the police) weren't there, then it is not entrapment.

I don't think it's entrapment. They start it all.

They do use people who pretend to be 12 years old and seek them out and purposely talk dirty to them. You didn't really think that they were using real 12 year olds and letting these guys say sexually graphic things to them did you?

It is entrapment. I don't feel bad for them at all and I'm glad they're catching them but it absolutely is entrapment. They have people posing as children to chat with men on the internet and then invite them over to their homes for sex. On some of the shows they've even convinced the guy to come over right now or to take his clothes off before coming in the house. But in some places, entrapment is legal so that probably plays a big part in where they film.
