Question: If its a game show its pre-recorded. Only News is live. The sitcoms and stuff are pre-recorded also.
Unless you mean recorded live with a live audience, they barely do that anymore, most shows use a fake audience laugh. They used to have a real audience back then.

they don't do that but sometimes on a game show and TRL on MTV is live

a lot of TV shows are filmed in front of a live audience which consist of 1/2 tourists who think they "won" these free tickets and 1/2 extras paid by Central Casting and other agencies to clap and act like they are enjoying themselves, regardless of how boring the show actually is. They do this for all talk shows too. They never broadcast the same day, as the taped show then has to go to editing and if it's a talk show it will play usually within 3 days. On a tv series it could take months to air.
Most of the time, no, they aren't live. Sometimes sitcoms will be "filmed in front of a live audience," but that just means that a group of people watched the show being taped. I think Seinfeld was like that, and I know the late shows (Jon Steward, Jay Leno, David Letterman) are in front of a live audience but they are taped earlier in the day.
American Idol is one of the few shows that is done nearly live. There is always tape delay (you know, just in case somebody drops the F bomb), but it's pretty close.
Shows like Lost or Heroes are not done live at all. In fact, the sets are mostly closed and they don't allow an audience. They are taped days or weeks in advance before they are shown on network TV.
