There was a school shooting, where a kid named Jimmy brought a gun into school. Keith went in and tried to talk to him, but unfortunately, Jimmy shot himself. As Keith was kneeling next to his body in shock, Dan went in, picked up the gun, and shot Keith.
Keith was engaged to Karen, who is Lucas' mom, who used to be Dan's girlfriend. Also, in season 1, Keith slept with Deb, who had been Dan's wife at the time.
The brothers really had never had a good relationship. It's just sad it had to end like that.
Jealousy really. Dan caught Keith and Deb sleeping together and he also thought that Keith tried to kill him in the shop fire.
