Wow I think you need to watch the first 4 seasons on DVD, you can rent them on Netflix. I'll give you a brief overview without going into any character detail.
Basically Flight Oceanic 815 going from Sydney to Los Angeles crashed 1000 miles off course. The plane split in two and the show begins following the lives and stories of the survivors of the front section.
Soon those survivors learn that the island is not your typical tropical paradise and that their are others who share the island with them.
They find a hatch in which there is food and modern conviences (well from the 1970s at least). It's discovered that this hatch was set up by a group called the Dharma Inititive.
While exploring the island the survivors encounter a French woman who has been on the island for over 15 years, a smoke monster that kills and its quite elusive and unexplained, a polar bear, and the surviving members of the tail section of the plane.
Eventually three of the original survivors are captured by "The Others". We find out that The Others have been living in a housing community that looks like any suburan neighborhood. They have medical facilities, and the ability to contact the outside world.
The survivors that were captured manage to escape and/or negotiate their freedom and return to their area of the island.
There is sooo many more details but it would take forever to fill them all in, maybe someone else can elaborate on my explaination a little bit. Hope that helped catch you up a little, but like I said before you really need to watch the previous seasons to fully comprehend the series.

I started watching Lost. But I was the one that got lost. So I gave up and went back to Daffy Duck!
