The latest opinion is that he is not one guy or former F1 driver, but several, depending on who is available on any given day for filming, so there is no right or wrong answer to this question. Clarkson and the BBC just like to keep you guessing! The frontrunner for "White Stig" at the moment is Julian Bailey.
The first "Black" Stig was F1 driver Perry McCarthy, but he ran foul of the shows producers when he revealed his identity in his autobiography and not long after the "Black Stig" was supposedly seen driving off the deck of the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible after failing to stop in time.
"Black Stig" was thus replaced in the more recent series by "White" stig (the colour of his overalls), but as yet, no-one has admitted to being white stig on either a part-time or full-time basis, apart from a Swedish snowmobile driver who doubled as the Stig during the recent Winter Olympic specials. is that that show where 3 middle aged gay men test drive duvets? great question im sorry i cant answer but id love to find out so i will keep watching this one If you go to the bbc website and find the top gear microsite, it should tell you there. I can remember looking it up a while ago. Hope this helps its me. It's probably more than one driver. I think there are probably three or four Stigs with different specialties. At least one of them must be an instructor and another a professional test driver.
I love Top Gear, but I would love to make them drive around for a day in a 1980 Austin Metro with drum brakes. I mean really, how many people have ￡15-￡20,000 to buy the cars on that show? I'm going to drive it, not live in it. some say he eats thunder and farts lightening

all I know is he's called th Stig the original stig who wore black was perry mc carthy who got the sack for revealing in his autobiography that he was the stig,
his replacement who wares white is ben collins, who drove in ascar, nascar, & touring car .
collins also appeared on the show as himself several times, racing a kid on a skateboard down a hill, catching a parachutist while driving a convertable, & playing car football in toyota aygo's.
the accident report from richard hammond's high speed crash states that collins "worked closely with top gear as a high performance driver and consultant". It does not name him as 'the stig' though.
it is also rumoured that some car manufacturers use their own test drivers for insurance purposes. its Perry McCarthy and thats for def ha someone said damon hill?
