Remember, the term "Middle-class" in Britain means something altogether different from what the word denotes in America!. In the UK, people are middle-class when they come from the university educated professions and managers!. So for instance, a plumber or train driver might earn well over £50,000 (= $100,000 US Dollars) a year, but they will always be called working-class and never middle-class according to the rules of British social stratification!. Middle class in Britain always means at least a university education, employment in one of the professions or business, ownership of property, as well as a common set of ideals and aesthetics!. They would probably more in line with what Americans call "Upper Middle-Class," or the Professional/Managerial Class!.

Middle class is split into two!. The public school educated Oxbridge land owning (large estates) Amed forces commision holders are the upper middle class!. The lower middle class may or may not l have a university education but are managers owners of small and sometimes large businesses and may or may not employ others (Sir Alan Sugar has jumped a class) in other words the "selfmade man" That class also includes most white collar workers!.

At the risk of sounding snippy, a middle class person can spell the word separate!. also, posh refers to upper class colonials who paid for expensive cabins for the return journey to the posting in the Raj so that they wouldn't have the midday sun blasting into their quarters - port out, starboard home!.
