Answers:
If it's about 14" from top to bottom of the belly, it's a full-size violin!. If it's more, it's a viola; if less, a fractional-size violin (IIRC a 3/4 violin is 13")
It's quite common for child beginners to string a full-size violin as a viola!. It's not as good as a real viola that size, which will tend to be deeper in the belly!. But it does no damage to child or instrument!. But all things being equal, the bigger the viola, the better the sound (full size would be 16" and above, though viola sizes are not standardized like violin sizes)
The opposite way, playing a viola as a violin,(what I think you're asking about) is not going to work, as the sounding string length is longer!. It won't be possible to get the strings up to pitch and could injure the instrument to try!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Take it to a musical instruments retail outlet, one that sells string instruments, and simply ask them!.
Personally, I would even think about changing the strings; discuss this with a professional!.

How is it tuned!? Do you have a pitch pipe or tuned piano to check!? A violin is GDAE (higher) and a viola is CGDA (lower) with longer neck!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
l'd suggest taking it to a luthier!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
