If one album sounds different than another, doesnt that mean a band sold out?!

Question: If one album sounds different than another, doesnt that mean a band sold out!?
Let me explain!. If a band has a good first album, and then a good second album, but when the third album comes out, it sounds not like a whole different genre, but it sounds different like kind of off from what people were used to listening to!. and if the band changed a little because they didnt want to keep making the same albums over and over, isn't that like selling out because they want their fans to keep buying their albums!? I mean, do they change it because they themselves are tired of the same music!? or do they change it because they don't want people to get tired of it!? I mean it seems like it would be selling out if you change your sound so that people dont get tired of your music!. You shouldnt care if people get tired of the music, because thats the bands type of music!. and for them to change for the fans, seems like selling out to me!. but i dont mean switching a whole genre!. if this is not selling out, can you please explain it to me!? I'm a little confused!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

it really just depends!. if a band, like my chemical romance, makes two speed punk/emocore albums, and then makes a highly creative, albeit very poppy, third album, it doesn't mean they have sold out (i'm gonna get blasted for supporting mcr!.) it usually means that the band is maturing, trying to find a sound they like, sometimes they stick with it, sometimes they don't!.

however, if a hardcore punk band releases 10 underground albums, and then moves to a major label and releases a pop emo album, yes they're selling out!.

to make it simple: if the sex pistols released 10 albums that sound like never mind the bollocks, moved to a major label and then sounded like boys like girls, they would be sell outs!.

if green day released 1 underground punk album, and then got signed to a major label and released an album that sounded like my chemical romance, they probably wouldn't be sellouts!.

i hope that helps!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Just because a band starts playing songs that sound different, doesn't mean they're selling out!. Band evolve musically, and nobody would want to listen to the same album come out over and over!.

However, if a band changes their sound to sound more like more popular or mainstream bands, so they can get a bigger following or get on MTV or anything like that, it's selling out!. It's not the musical change, it's the reasons for doing it that determine whether or not a band sells out!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

No i wouldnt say that!. Listen the Weezer (the blue album) from 1994!. Then listen to Weezer's 96 album pinkerton!. Completly diffent sound!., but Pinkerton is considered the basis for Emo!. It is loved now, but hated thenWww@Enter-QA@Com

Nope not at all!. I'll use the band Death for example!. There first few albums were great stuff!. And then Individual Thought Patterns was released!.!. a far more technical sound!. Then Symbolic was released!. Lets just say there is one way to describe the album!.!.!.!. Holy Sh!t!.!.!.! Such an awesome album!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Nope!. Selling out is when a band changed the music to fit what is popular!. Doing it for the money, and still managing to SELL OUT at their concerts!.
Sum 41 changed their sound over their time, they are not sell outs!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

that's not selling out, that's life!.
musicians are artists, and artists don't keep putting out the same stuff for their entire life!.
selling out is more like if they change their style to become more marketable!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

not at all!.!.!.!.!.my favorit band is Linkin Park!.!.!.!.there first two albums were more rock and rappish!.!.!.!.now the new album!.!.!.minutes to midnight!.!.!.they were more political and more soft!.!.!.that doesnt mean they sold out!.!.!.they just made the music that came to there mind at the timeWww@Enter-QA@Com

Hell no!! It doesn't mean they've sold out!. It just means that the band is evolving musically!. And alot of bands kinda lean toward whatever music they're listining to at the time!. Take Korn, or Slipknot for example!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

no, not at all!.
i detest the phrase "sell out" with a passion!. You can never really know a band's motives, whether something superficial or not, without talking to them personally!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

sometimes bands develop and grow in different directions!. just because their music became more popular because of it doesn't mean that was their original goal!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

well also take in fact that if your doing *****y in sales your obviously going to have to do something drastic in your careerWww@Enter-QA@Com

bands grow, they learn new ways to play their instruments or different sounds they like!. they meet new people that help them mix up their sound a bit!.

(simple plan kind of sounded way different in their 3rd)Www@Enter-QA@Com

If you want to change your sound, then cool!. But if your changing your sound just to match whats hot at the moment, then you are a selloutWww@Enter-QA@Com

If they changed for the money, they're a sell out!.
If they changed for their own feelings then they're not!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

No just means the band is trying a different sound!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It isn't selling out, unless they do it for cash!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I'm not even gonna properly answer it, I'll just go on a pissed off rant!.

A: No, they necessarily didn't sell out
B: We say bands sold out JUST cuz they went mainstream!.!. half the time they don't sound different at all!.!.!.
i!.e: Fall Out Boy's Take This To Your Grave compared to Fall Out Boy's From Under The Cork Tree !. !. !. MUSICALLY, THERE WAS NO DAMN DIFFERENCE! Just because a band is going somewhere, and making money, that apparently makes them "sell outs"!.
Very rarely does a band ACTUALLY sell out, where the sound ACTUALLY changes, and if it does ACTUALLY change, it was SOLELY to get money!.
C: How do you know they were in it JUST for the money!? Therefor, you can't judge!.

PS: When I say "you" I mean people in general not you, the asker of this question =) Sorry, lol I did go on a bit of a rant!. But that term irks me!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It depends on the band!. I know if I were releasing albums, with each one, I'd get people calling me sell-out, because all my material is different!. I'm a metal guy, but I accidentally wrote a country-rock type song ala The Eagles, I have a doom type song, a lot of thrash songs, a couple death/black metal songs, and a couple melodic metal songs!. Why would a band want to keep putting out the same thing!? That's boring!. I like what Metallica did in the 80's!. all 4 albums had their own sound quality and style, yet there was still a common thread!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
