I only ever run across a few people who remember or have heard of them...
Ah, but not unknown to me! They did a lot of work with Al Jourgensen back in the day, so that's how I knew of them. Great band that really deserved more exposure.
I've mentioned them a few times in here, but I'll say it again, Band of Susans. Some of the most amazing guitar work in the history of rock.

Solstafir -- Progressive Black Metal
http://www.myspace.com/solstafir
Some descriptions of them.........
Sólstafir's music is like the sounds from the bedroom as Darkthrone rapes The Doors while fingerbanging Bathory.
-Imhotep.fi
Drums guitars ,bass, some vocals
-Svavar Austmann
Oasis, if they were a compleatly differant band, with different members playing different music

Praying Mantis, a NWOBHM Band with absolutely KILLER melodic twin Guitar lines...better than Maiden even. Although their singer isn't as good as Dickinson.

The Fall of Icarus
I really liked Canadian outfit Artificial Joy Club in the late 90s. They sounded a bit like Garbage, but there was more of a dry humour in their lyrics. They only released one album "Melt" and featured a song that was played quite a bit here in Australia on alternative radio "Sick and Beautiful". Hey, any song that can put Kevorkian, Star Trek and Brad Pitt in their lyrics has got to be pretty good!
The Cab

Need to Breathe.
Amazing band, and even better live.
"It's A Beautiful Day" David and Linda LaFlamme. First album
(self-titled but commonly known as the "White Bird" album) only. Each album they did sounded totally different and this is the only one I cared for, I love it! San Francisco group late '60s.
Gear Daddies (Austin, Minnesota), 1988-92.

awesome local band =)
Most of the bands I listen to are "unheard of" by most people associated with guitar-oriented music.
Diamond Head, Angel Witch, Demoniac, Witchfinder General, Holocaust, Celtic Frost, Venom.
Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks (especially from the Blue Thumb label years)
http://www.danhicks.net/
I love the Lickettes' harmonies and Dan's dry wit in his lyrics. The violin solo in I Scare Myself on the Striking It Rich album is amazing - the link below is but a poor substitute.
Dan got his start drumming in the house band at the Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada in 1965. The light shows and "parties" there eventually moved to San Francisco to become the psychedelic rock show of the Peace & Love era. I first saw them in concert as the warm-up act for Cheech and Chong when C&C's act included crawling around stage as dogs.
