What's the name of instrument on Led Zep's, 'In the Light'?!
Question: The beginning of the song has an instrument that could be a keyboard/synth, but the notes bend unlike a pitch wheel. I have not heard that sound on another song, do you know what it is?

I'm not sure, but I believe that it's a synthesizer, imitating "oboesque wind instrument" that they play in the Middle-East.
But, I bet that's the name that you're looking for, so I'll have to come back.
EDIT - Or is it a "string-sounding" instrument?
Either way - I DO know that J. P. Jones recreated it on an Analog Synth.
P.S.!! - As early as the Mellotron - a lot of Keyboards had pitch controls, that could immitate notes "bending" like non-synth.
EDIT2 - Hippie - I found this on - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id...
which (to me) is the most "complete" and "accurate" source on the net - and it does not list any "odd" instruments -
Line-up/Musicians
- Jimmy Page / acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin
- Robert Plant / harmonica, vocals
- John Paul Jones / bass, keyboards, mellotron, guitar, mandolin
- John Bonham / drums, percussion
- Ian Stewart / piano (4)
It must be mellotron tapes(?)
.
mandolin
its a synthesizer, custom built im sure for John Paul Jones and he can make just about anything come out of it sound wise of course ...good luck
i'm pretty sure its a synthesizer, they can gets tons of different sounds off that.
It's a mellotron, played by JPJ. The beatles played around with one of these keyboards, too.
Here's a vid of a mellotron:
