Post Grunge just a title to sell records?!

Question: I love post grunge (semisonic, marcy playground, revis, third eye blind, silverchair,Our lady peace, bush, the verve and on and on) but hate the haters who say it is just pop garbage. What do you think great music passed down from nirvana, alice and chains, pearl jam or teenie pop garbage!

Genres and sub-genres are used to help people determine what type of music to expect from a band. And since the label is subjective, there can be people who take issue with certain bands claiming to be of a certain genre/sub-genre (see the dispute over the "punk" label).

So to relate back to your original question, the term "post grunge" is used to sell records. But what's wrong with that? There are more and more records coming out every year. The genre/sub-genre classification gives the consumer SOMETHING to base their purchasing decisions on. If the artist is labeled as "post grunge" and someone is a fan of grunge music, that signals to them that they may like this music. A genre/sub-genre label is just a cue used for a purchase decision (and for debate on Yahoo! Answers).

Nirvana is over rated. Alice and chains and pearl jam are alright.

Star for you for mentioning Our Lady Peace

And no Post-Grunge actually is a sub-genre to me. I feel that it really separates those bands from Metal and Punk/Pop-Punk. Post-Grunge is my favorite Genre :D

i wouldnt consider any of them post grunge. actually, i dont even like the term post grunge and consider it invalid. sixteen stone came out in 94, so bush would be grouped with the likes of grunge era artists. other than that, the music you listed would be alternative-pop artists.

I think is a great genre, but they could be better than they are, i mean everybody of them except Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. All of them have talent but they are not using it as they should. Personally, I do not think Post Grunge is a title to sell records, I think is a title to kill other genres. I am pretty sure you already know the history of Nirvana, they just killed 80's rock, yeah most of them were hard rock anthems and power ballads and the idea is not original anymore. I bet that some people are missing that decade. Back to the Post Grunge, its a great genre and as I said they have talent, I guess if they dont take advantage of that talent they will experience the same that glam metal bands did, the idea is not original anymore and people is getting tired of listening the same riffs over and over.

Well , you'd have to ask the one who termed that phrase. I dunno, it sounds like saying "Well..it's grunge-y sounding, but since those bands aren't around anymore...and we want to be associated with that , we'll say..POST". Hey , i ain't knockin ya - i'm an "older metal" type guy, but if the bands you like are close tied to Nirvana , AIC, Pearl Jam , etc. , i'd listen to what you got before i gave all that Nu Metal BS a chance. As far as capitalizing on a name? THAT's the fault of the record industry and the fans that blindly drive it. If someone from a label is in a crowded area , and hears some dude fart , and 20 people say "Wow that sounded cool!" , trust me...."fart dude" will be in a studio recording it (with a nice pay advance). Then , "Fart" will be all the rage! People will buy the "Fart Live" cd after that , then the stoopid genres will flow (leak?). Proto Fart , then Post Fart. Nu Fart, Death Fart, ....Chili Fart, Hybrid "Beer / Garlic" Fart, ..and so on. LOL! Oh- Sorry, i'm ahead of my time , cause i already claim "Grunge Fart", ....did that one this morning. LOL!
