Can't go wrong with a Shure SM58 for vocals. They sell one with an on / off switch for a little more.

The Shure PG48 might be similar to what you have. It's a mic that works, but doesn't excel at anything. It's recommended for speaking...
If you cough up the cash for a SM58 or the possibly even more versatile SM57... you'll be happy. I don't know if a SM48 is the same thing as a PG48 or it might be a step up from there...
There are mics that can cost you $ 1.000 or more . bruel & kjaer , neumann , and some AKG s are on that price range .
for your budget i`d recomend SENNHEISER , AND THEN SHURE . they both have very capable mics on that price range . my personal favourites are . shure sm57 for percussion , guitars , horns ( low to very high decibels ) about $ 60 , for vocals sennheiser evolution e835 about $ 80 . check all the evolution line from sennheiser . and the most used mic for vocals the sure sm58 is about $ 80 as well ..however it is suited more for live performance but you can record very nicely with it . hope this helped .
