Answers: i've always known indie as the type of label a band has, but i c it used as a type of music, can someone please explain what exactly indie music is.

Indie rock isn’t really a musical genre, but also a marketing tool and means of social differentiation part of depends upon a certain lack of popularity and specialized knowledge to achieve their value. The term ‘indie rock’ is typically used as a catch-all used to describe alternative rock that prevails primarily within the independent music scene and originally used in reference to many of the artists’ use off independent record labels as opposed to major record labels. When attempting to use the term ‘indie rock’ as a genre, the dynamic nature of umbrella term is quickly revealed as the list of genres and subgenres associated with ‘indie rock’ quickly multiplies and morphs. Essentially ‘indie rock’ is more of an ideology than an aesthetic.

The ‘independent’ idea comes from both the DIY attitude of the bands as well as the lower-budget record labels for which they often recorded – the idea being that by not submitting to large corporate labels, the artists maintain a certain amount of autonomy. While it’s roots lie in the underground and alternative rock of the ‘80s, indie rock differentiated itself from alternative rock in the very early ‘90s as alternative came to refer to harder rock represented by the explosion of bands like Nirvana. Since then indie rock has been in large part a reaction to phenomenon. One central component seems to be that indie rock simply isn’t compatible with mainstream sensibilities. The reasons given for this are vast and varied. However, one common element is the idea that it is rock made by and for outsiders, much like alternative used to be before its crossover into mainstream.

People like to brand unrecognized bands with the term Indie.

It makes them seem sophisticated.

But really, indie is a label, or an unsigned band.

Indie is SUPPOSE to mean a band or artist that is signed on an independent record label, not a genre.
But recently, the term "indie" has been associated with bands with a specific alternative folk sound and this sound has been dubbed "indie" though sometimes, those bands (such as Modest Mouse) aren't on an indie label.

In popular music, indie music (from independent) is any of a number of genres, scenes, subcultures and stylistic and cultural attributes, characterised by perceived independence from commercial pop music and mainstream culture and an autonomous, do-it-yourself (DIY) approach

When I think of Indie I think of bands that have a more raw, and almost jazz feel that bands on the radio do not have. Not to mention that most true indie bands, you will never hear on the radio.

it supposedly was unsigned bands, but now their are indie labels so i dont really get it either,

What indie (short for independent) REALLY is is rock that's done independently, without a (major) record label. The term is usually used for more alternative-style bands. So it's really not supposed to refer to the style, but it often is.

bands like :
the strokes
babyshambles
the view

It's like a soft(ish) form of 'rock'
People also like it because they believe a lot of indie bands aren't 'sell-outs' to the 'big corporations' and use this as a way of expressing their so called individuality
