He doesn't sound 'rock' because rock hadn't really transformed into what is today then. Elvis' music was different to all the other music that was being made back then, he basically influenced a major change in music into what it is today.

While I'll agree that most of them are great, they aren't individuals who left their mark on Rock n'Roll like Elvis. That's why he is THE KING.
he predated those bands and was rock before that...sorry charlie.... the King is "the King", because he was the King...
the bands you listed were just bands...part of rock and roll, legendary as well, but just bands among many other bands....

Elvis took hillbilly musiic and gave it a twist that wasn't heard before by mixing it with R&B. They called it "rockabilly". He had more hits than anybody.

oh yes he was rock way before kiss was in the picture. elvis will always be king in my book. you better look into your rock legions, you will find elvis there.
I don't agree that he was the King, either. People just paint him that was because they say 'without Elvis, music wouldn't be where it is today'. There were pleanty of other underground artists at the time, that were doing exactly what Elvis was doing. Elvis was just the one that happened to go big.
Someone else would have done the exact same thing, if it wasn't him. He was most deffinitely not the only one.
However, he was the one that took it mainstream. And, for that reason, people think he was the King.
I'm pretty sure that they call him that because he kind of started the rock revolution and made that kind of music popular. Before that they didn't listen to anything like it.
Dude- Elvis is an Institution that still makes over 250 million a year in revenue.
