What doest he definition of "indie" truly mean, why do some people lab!

Question: Indie is a slang termed used nowadays. Indie stands for independent. Especially a band's status if they're on a major record label, or independent label. People use indie to refer to as Alternative Rock.

But my question is why do a lot of Alternative Rock listeners (primarily) label themselves indie, or say they listen to indie? Considering a lot of bands are independent without a major record label that are not Alternative Rock.
Can anyone enlighten me on this or explain to me why they label themselves an indie?

Indie was originally used only for the purpose of record labels, but recently, a alternative folk sound is associated with the term 'folk" and bands that aren't on indie labels (ie Snow Patrol and Modest Mouse) get the label indie cause of their sound. Other bands that are on independent labels aren't called indie cause they don't have that certain "sound". If you listen to bands like The Shins or Beulah, you'll know what type of "sound" I'm talking about.
It's just a label, like emo. Indie the stereotype, I guess has a certain dressing style and interest ie also in indie movies, deep reading, museums, modern art etc.

i like indie music and i have no clue, it used to mean talent that hasn't signed with a major label.
i think nowadays it means any band that the mainstream has not accepted that is not really hard-rock, or bands that the teenie-boppers are not into, this should remove my chemical romance, hopefully.
i think it is better classified as college radio rock.

indie music suppose against mainstream music (unique and different, individualistic) and major label - seem for you to sound a certain way so yea ... !!!
