Rock Guitarists: Where do you get your inspiration for making songs from?!

Question: Hey fellow rockers,
I Consider myself to be a pretty decent guitarist for only having 2 years of exp. But I need help, I come up with a sweet riff but then I can't put it in wit anything. I just can't think of anything to add to it and I get really like, I guess kinda sad cause I have an awesome riff and hate to see it wasted with nothing to put it with. How can I get more inspiration for this?

Don't forget, it has to sound good within the key too, not just a bunch of chords jumbled together. Also;
How do you:
Convert a melody in your head into chord progressions/solos etc.
Easily find what key/scale you are going to have to play in when creating a solo, or any other part of the song? (Without using a website?)
What is an easy and fast way to learn and remember what 5th chord (power chord) you are playing?

It is time to grow up and get serious now because I am doing a band thing now and I needa be able to prove myself.

Thanks fellow rockers !
Peace out !

You really need to learn a little music theory.

First of all learn all the notes on the fret board and be able to find them with ease. Learn all the scales that go along with each key. Its really not that hard - the patterns repeat themselves only from different positions (starting points/frets.) Memorization is really the only way to know all the stufff you are asking about. I'd get a book like this:

then practice, practice, practice

listen to some early santana. he is the guitar god and no doubt inspirational. kickin up a solo is hardly planned, you just get into a flow and remember it.

you don't make a riff. a good riff should come out of nowhere while just jamming. thats how i and lots of other guitarist make out riffs. tom morello even said in an interview that when he comes up of a riff, he doesn't sit down and trys to come up with something. he just sits down, plays guitar, goes with the flow, and a riff comes up. but i dunno it might depend on the person. but thats how i do it.

sometimes it helps to play with a drummer and let the music turn simply with a roll and a beat change... thats how i have got my best music.. or at least completely finished songs

Guitar players make their music comin from the heart.

It helps me to play along with drum loops from a keyboard and playing along with the moronic demo songs it gives me.
