Well, I do here a lot of hip hop at school. I live in Atlanta, Georgia, so you can probably already imagine the type of school that I go to. It is very multi-diverse. I will not lie though, most people at my school prefer rap/hip hop over rock.

To me, I just saw rap and hip hop as an overrated genre at my school. I rarely can find people who like the same type of music as me. Also, I started to develop my taste in music in middle school. Back then, I ditched whatever I listened to back then and listened to what my friends enjoyed listening to.

I don't hate rap/hip hop. I just find it to be overrated.

any of the people who constantly come to "this side of the tracks" to bash hip-hop and rap and make arrogant, ignorant statements against it are too close minded to read your whole question, let alone actually sit down and give it a chance.

some people are stuck in their little worlds.

De, you might get normal, balanced human beings answering that they're willing to take the time, but the crazies that post these hip hop bashing threads are never going to change. They need something to hate - it takes their focus away from the sorry excuses for lives they have.
I feel you, it's frustrating as hell, but these people are not right in the head.

(and can we please do something about that damned (c)rap "joke"! Every single one of them who says it sounds so pleased with themselves as if they just invented it and it's comedy genius. It's not.)

You know they only listen to people like 50 cent. I mean when they come over here posting that stuff, thats who they use as evidence. They have no clue what RHH is. They just come over here posting garbage so they can talk sh!t.

Simple answer: Google "Wynton Marsalis Critique of Rap." One of the best jazz musicians of all time (who just happens to be African-American) has constructively criticized rap and has pointed out how rap and hip-hop are, at their core, "corrupt" forms of music. 'Nuff said.

It goes both ways. There is ignorance and assumptions made from both sides. I'm all about hip hop, but I LOVE musical expression, regardless of the genre. Nowadays, when you ask someone what kind of music they like, the most response you get is, "I like everything" even though they probably don't. But I really do listen to all kinds of music.

No, seriously. Check it out:

Hello
I'm Darth Maul I'm in the R&P Top 10 and one of the biggest poster to that section.
I'd just like to go on record here as saying the whole thing is as silly as silly gets.
I'd like to apologize for whatever silly brainless People from My section that are apparently coming here and bashing Ya'll
It's ridiculous.
By the same token I'm getting really tired of Hip Hop section People mindlessly bashing Rock in The R&P Section.
It is all silly and all needs to stop.
I'm going to see what I can do to stop the foolishness from My end. Ya'll see if you can get a leash on peeps like this "Escobar" character and some others from this section, alright?

Thank You for Your Attention and Help
Darth Maul

Now, as for Me..I like a lot of Rap Music some of My favorite Rap Artists include
Ice T
Ice Cube
Dr Dre
The Geto Boys
The Beastie Boys
Cypress Hill
In Rap, as in Rock, I'm Old School

Actually, I like quite a bit of Rap too. Of course, I'm not an idiot coming over and bashing R&HH. The only other time I came over here was to ask for song suggestions for De La Soul. Good music is good music. I don't judge.

I actually like some hip-hop. I'm not terribly educated in it, and I've certainly heard some that I haven't liked, but I really enjoy stuff like Mos Def, Jurassic 5, Kool Keith (Dr. Octagon and Black Elvis particularly), the Roots, etc. I've been lucky enough to have a couple friends who have delved into it and showed me stuff that I would like, and I always try to keep an open mind. Rock is my forte, but there is plenty of great hip-hop out there. I understand people just having a distaste for a genre in general (I'm not too big on the modern country for instance), but I see people try to say it's not music and I just don't get it. It's all music, just different stuff moves different people.
The stupid stereotypes are just a justification mechanism.

I guess there are ignorant and short sighted people in every music section that exists on y!a. The truth is that the last 4 months I'm around I've seen many questions where rockers curse rapers and vice versa and have never seen something like that with country and rock and I really can't find an explanation. I guess I'm what you would call a hardcore rocker, and am mostly active in the r&p section (not as active as darth though) because it's the section where I can express an opinion as I think I know at least some things about rock. I would never post in a section where I have not enough knowledge to make my case. And that's where the problem starts I guess. Many people express opinions about things they know nothing about. The other thing I noticed is, that if you're not exploring something or if you're in a completely different genre, the things you tend to hear from "the other side" is usually the crappy stuff. I used to think that rapers are some stupid guys wearing baseball hats the wrong way moving their hands in a silly way talking nonesense among many yo's!! what a wrong impression. lately there was a tv show on greek television using music to illustrate important historical events. so this guy played some rap, and hip hop stuff whilst illustrating things from the katrina disaster and the help people (in Louisiana?) never got, and gosh that songs "rocked" they had the rhythm, they had the mood and they had the lyrics!! rebel songs, the thing rap was actually about if I'm correct, why hadn't I heard any of this stuff before? because only the crappy poppy commercial stuff comes over the pond..
So to come to a conclusion, I think people who say "rock sucks" or "hip hop is s**t" simply are ignorant stupid and don't have a clue what music (any music) actually is about: expressing moods and feelings, making you think or dream or both and everybody has a different way doing that. If rap and hip hop is the thing that makes your heart jump it's fine with me. I'm into rock and that should be fine with you. As for the crap, there is just as much crappy rock floating through the air as is crappy hip hop. Enjoy your music as I enjoy mine and be sure that there are many people in my section that respect your choices as much as they do mine, and I'm sure the same goes for yours.
nuff said
rejoice!

I certainly don't make judgments based on the artists you mentioned, just like I wouldn't want judgments about Rock music to be made based on some of the current Rock artists that are out there. Every genre has artists that are a complete misrepresentation of the body of work.

I actually listened to quite a bit of Rap in the 90s - Ice Cube, Ice T, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, etc. It's a part of my musical upbringing...just like Rock was.

i like rock and rap, and I think Nas had a lot to talk about, he's a visionary.
I like lupe, kanye, and a lot of underground rap stuff

hello, i'm squiks, i hail from the R&P section, and i agree with you, this does need to stop. i'll admit that i don't care for much hip/hop, but that's partially my fault, because i really haven't looked into it, i've only heard the mainstream stuff i hear my friends play, or whatever is on the radio.... i agree that it's very childish, so we all need to do our part and we'll stop people that we find bashing you guys, and you can do the same for us. thank you for stating this maturely, not going to R&P and bashing us like many others have done in the past, it's not payback, it just keeps the war going on.
