Why do people say Led Zeppelin is Heavy Metal?!

Question: They are NOT. Nearly a third of there music was a acoustic, and the majority of there songs were far more similar to blues or folk than metal.
Yes, i know they were a catalyst for the metal movement. I do understand that. I recognize that them and black Sabbath are probably the most influential bands when it comes to metal music. BUT that does not make them metal. Listening to a greatest hits by may make them out to be near half metal but thats thats because people dont recognize or realize there other songs. There greatest hits albums cater more to metal heads, and actually those albums contain most of the songs that can even be considered metal. Much of there later albums were actually very funk and reggae oriented. My favorite though are the first half of albums where the majority are pure heavy blues.

oh yes and did i mention blues is nearly all african americans, so hey hetal-heads that i often hear trash black people. You get my point. african americans do much more than rap.

Greg i think what you said was extremely on point. and yes i do agree with the first answer that it was considered extreme and heavy metal, Greg is right in that just because it was thought of that way, doesnt mean it was. to anybody who doesnt respect the black men who played the blues and paved the way for the music we now enjoy, well, i just feel sorry for you. i dont know if that would pertain to people who listen to metal, but if it does, get a history lesson. and if you do recognize these most talented musicians than i think you can appreciate what you now have that much more.

It's possible you may be looking at them w/ 2008 standards. By *70s* standards, they were 'heavy metal'. Reduced to 'hard rock' by today's standards. But still seen a a big influence on metal none the less. They were among the heavier bands in their day.

They had the look of heavy metal and aspired lots of heavy metal bands. I think people, including critics, dropped the word "aspired" and just put them with heavy metal. Beetles had at least one punk song, so it MUST BE a punk band.
