Of your list, I've heard of all but Malcom Middelton. However, I'd say Portishead and Joy Division are the only bands that have had widespread notoriety. When speaking of Joy Division, most Americans would be more familiar with New Order. Portishead did achieve a relatively known hit with "Sour Times". There are certainly fans of the other bands you have listed, but I wouldn't say they're well known.

As an interesting side note, one of my favorite british bands, Catherine Wheel, were relatively unknown among brits but experienced quite a bit of success in the States.

i kno that lifehouse arent well known over here (britain) but there not reli rock style.

Yes, there are many successful band in AMerica but have not caught hold in Britain. I just cannot varify.

there's lots of bands like that. they usually eventually "cross the pond" but most bands are like that for quite a while until they get real big. just compare the british top 40 with the american top 40 and there's a few that are apparent.

i checked out britain's top 40 on bbc and i have no idea who adele or robyn or quite a few others even are.

Hmmm. Hard to say, as I don't know what's big in Britain...

Well, I've yet to hear bands like MCR, FOP, and their ilk mentioned in Britain with such rabid fervour...

i dont know about these for sure, but i will name some bands for you

-The Hush Sound
-Valencia
-Nickelback
-All Time Low
-Plain White T's
-We The Kings
-The Higher

Serj Tankian
System of a Down
Kaiser Chiefs

just a few

What about the plain white ts. They're fairly new, had that one song "Hey there Delilah"

not sure if they are big there or not but these are the ones I like
Hinder, Nickleback, Alterbridge, Red jumpsuit apparatice, Korn, No Doubt, Coldplay, Stone Sour, Disturbed, Moonspell (not American portagul I believe) , Breaking Benjamin, Bon Jovi, Crossfade, Counting Crows, Evanescence, HIM, Linkin Park, Matchbox 20, Satana, Seether
there's more lol but I'd be here all day

Portishead is the only band I've heard of on your list.

i've only heard of joy division

hmm there probably are but i cant name them off the top of my head.

The Arctic Monkeys are big here, they're the only ones ive heard of, but thats not usally my type of music so i wouldnt know.

Oh i love the magic numbers and the artic monkey's... i've heard of the kaiser cheifs but not much of the others

From the list that you mentioned, I've only heard of 2 of those bands: kaiser chiefs and joy division.
Kaiser chiefs had 1 or 2 radio hits, and then they kind of faded out, and I haven't really heard anything about them in roughly 1 year or so. There are thousands of American bands/artists that you've probably never heard of, and I would it's the same from your side.
