Do you have any good examples of gothic rock?!
Question: Thank you.
Answers: Thank you.
Gothic Rock is my favourite genre of music. [Despite the fact that GNR is my favourite band... but anyway;]
Right, so if you want Gothic Rock with a more 'traditional' sound then the following bands are great;
The Sisters of Mercy [my 2nd favourite band]
Rosetta Stone
The Danse Society
Virgin Prunes
Bauhaus
Fields of the Nephilim
Ghost Dance
Southern Death Cult
The Wake
If you want to try some Deathrock [which came from Gothic Rock - basically a subgenre] then I recommend;
Rozz Williams' Christian Death [they epitomised Deathrock]
- I would avoid Valor's Christian Death because he basically molested the name, in my opinion.
Shadow Project
All Gone Dead
45 Grave
Kommunity FK
Bloody Dead And Sexy
For a great new-ish Gothic Rock band that hasn't really been given enough recognition then I recommend;
The Ghost of Lemora
- a fantastic band in my opinion.
For Gothic/Doom Metal, you can't go wrong with;
Type O Negative
Farewell.
Type O Negative
One of my all time favorite groups...Sisters of Mercy. Classic goth rock.
LACRIMOSA
Gothic Rock:
Type O Negative
Bauhaus
The Cure
Abney Park
Gothic Metal:
Octavia Sperati
Sirenia
Epica
Theatre of Tragedy
Luminaria
Angtoria
Nighwish.
My knowledge is not big of Gothic Metal (yet) but..
Xandria
Bauhaus were one of the original goth bands from the early 80s, have a look ........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxODM2tSh...
And this is my fave........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6a_YQXFs7...
Enjoy !
Ramstein! Loved it at my local bar back at the day.
Ana Maria has most bases covered.
I would add
This Mortal Coil and The Cocteau Twins.
btw- you notice the absolute LACK of Marylin Manson responses from the experienced.
The Sisters of Mercy
In many ways their music defined Gothic rock in the 1980s.
Songs like "Temple of Love", "Walk Away", "This Corrosion" and "Lucretia My Reflection" are absolute classics of the genre.
Their albums are:-
First and Last and Always (1985)
Floodland (1987)
Vision Thing (1990)
Some Girls Wander By Mistake (Compilation of early independent singles and EPs) (1992)
A Slight Case of Overbombing (best of compilation) (1993)
The last two of the albums listed give a good comprehensive overview of their music, but I can highly recommend all of them.
Sisters of Mercy, Souxsie & The Banshees, Chameleons UK
Gothic rock is a very generic genre these days. There are many bands you could lump into gothic rock but they all sound very different. Examples of bands from different sub-genres:
"Darkwave":
The Birthday Massacre
Switchblade Symphony
"Doom Metal":
Amorphis
Type O Negative
Theatre of Tragedy (early)
The Gathering (early)
"Gothic Rock":
Lacuna Coil
Theatre of Tragedy (later)
The Gathering (later)
"Symphonic Metal":
Nightwish
After Forever
Within Temptation
Epica
Sirenia
Kamelot
Angtoria
Put it this way, Gothic Rock is usually defined by the "Beauty and the Beast" vocal style, which usually consists of a male singer growling (death grunts) and a female soprano singer.
I hope that helps.
You got some good answers here, but one that hasn't been mentioned yet (my personal favorite) is London After Midnight.
