A question about guitar skills and musical style?!
Question: Do you need to be shredding 10 notes a second to be considered a great guitarist? Because there are artists that are amazing because they play these riffs that sound amazing because they are emotional and melodic. Ex)John Frusciante, Kurt Cobain.
Can someone be considered a great guitarist if they play emotional and melodic riffs instead of fast and dangerous riffs?

A Thousand notes played for the sack of making noise will never equal 1 note placed in just the right place. Lead playing is like writing a story, you just can't blurt out everything in the first sentence it takes space to tell a story beginning, middle and end. Eddie, Eric,Kurt, even Chet atkins and Les Paul were great lead players but they were and are even better rythum players. Play what you feel in your soul. Music is a art not a competition

Cobain was hardly "melodic." He could barely handle his power chords. "Emotion" in playing is difficult to quantify. Some people find Joe Satriani emotional, while others feel he's about as personable in his playing as a dead fish.
That said, fast is not necessarily better. Being able to play fast is simply a matter of memorizing something and then continually speeding it up. Even seemingly "improvised" solos are based on certain patterns that musicians memorize. Playing fast is a skill, but not THE skill.
