hardcore - First, knwo the definition of punk:
Generally its
- Simple chord progression
- Fast tempo
- Overdriven guitars/bass
- Repetitive rhythm
- Simple vocal style
- Little dynamic contrast
Hardcore punk is faster than normal punk.(minor threat, bad brains, black flag) some people think its metalcore, so they call metalcore hardcore, which is wrong

Metalcore(and deathcore,moshcore,mathcore)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metalcore
^All of those in one
emocore-hardcore punk with introspective lyrics. Pretty deep stuff; basically originator of the word "emo" in the 80's; existed long before the word emo became associated with depressed scene kids and MCR.(examples: Rites of spring, embrace, one last wish; there was a wave after this that lost the hardcore punk sound(Moss Icon). That style existed until 1994. Then came a sty;e of indie rock that was somewhat influenced by the 2nd wave emo(Sunny Day Real Esate ,Texas is the reason) )

All are on WIki'.

& yes. FAR too many sub genres of hardcore..it's way outta hand.

dillinger escape plan (listen to calculating infinity)

Dan is right. Dillinger is definitely a great example of mathcore. No real groove to it. Instead of the whole 1,2,3,4 it's like doing algebra. It has weird time signatures and just a crazy circus-like feel.

look on wikipedia.

Mathcore is usually not very straight forward in format and usually doesn't use the common verse - refrain setup.

Listen to Protest the Hero's Kezia CD to hear what I mean or check their myspace. www.myspace.com/protestthehero (I think that's how it works)

It's also usually technical, as you can also hear from Protest's CD.

You can check it on Wiki.

And yeah, I'll only answer Mathcore cause there are so many cores, even 'Nintendocore' such as HORSE the Band.
