Would you classify Journey as an 80s band, or as a classic rock band?!

Question: For most of us, there is a very clear, very distinct separation of these two classifications. That said, a valid argument could be made for both, in the case of Journey. They are one of the few artists in which you COULD make an argument either way. Your thoughts?

Classic, sweetie.

I got there first album around 1976 or so. Might have been '78. Hell I can't remember exactly. I do know that one of the songs on that album (Lovin, Touchin, and Squeezin) I used to sing with a kid I babysat for who was about 5 and he is 32 now. Damn I am getting old.

classic, they've had 3 different lead singers. if your talking just about the steve perry version then maybe that band should be called an 80s band

They recorded some of their best stuff before 1980. They are definitely a classic.

I would classify them as a classic rock band. The reason for this is that they do not have the sound of the 80's bands. They kept a sound similar to 70's rock.

Classic, for the reasons listed above

...or best band EVER?

Being more a fan of the 80's Journey...I would still say classic.

The Warlock

definitely Classic Rock

A Flock of Seagulls...is an 80's Band

I think both. As time continues to march forward, you can't put a lock on the door of classic rock and declare that everything that came out after 1979 will never be considered "classic." That's faulty logic.

Journey was a valid rock band, but I think when the 80's came in with all it's weird music, they felt the need to conform to sell records and I think it changed their classification.

I loved their early stuff and although some of their 80's stuff was good, it was too "poppy" for me. I wish they'd reunite with Steve Perry and do a reunion tour.

Classic no doubt

Rckets: but then again can you classify Beatles, Genesis as rock or classic rock bands?

Well its all how you look at it. Journey was formed in the 70's and had 5 albums and 5 top singles all before the 80's even got here. I classify them as "classic rock", but thats just my perception. They deserve the title as far as I'm concerned.

Classic rock, IMO. In the EARLY 80's they were rock superstars. Their musical style is similar to some "contemporary mainstream" groups of later times, but in THEIR time they were a rock band, selling out arena's Nationwide.

80's bands are like Hall & Oates, Flock Of Seagulls, Dexies Midnight Runners, Boy George...

Classic Rock - There music has a feeling of legacy behind it, including some of the Steve Perry material!

The end of their career may have produced a weaker set, but it was not a copycat 80's style!

Classic Rock. They had a lot more hits in the 70's than the 80's.
