Hi,
Slash plays a Gibson Les Paul with Seymour Duncan pickups. You don't need to pay $3000 to get his sound though. He plays with very few pedals and the distortion is straight from the Marshall JCM amp ($3000-4000).
What I would do it get a decent guitar with a seymour duncan bridge pickup (optional). Good distortion on an amp with at least one 10" to 12" speaker. Probably 30 watts or more. Preferably a tube amp but that is optional (and expensive).
Also, on that solo, from November Rain, Slash has his wah pedal on and down halfway. That gives a distinct sound.
So here is the least expensive list:
Guitar with humbucker in bridge position
Amp with good distortion
Dunlop Slash Wah pedal or other dunlop wah
Thats it.

petrucci rocks, I seen him live a few times, up close and personal.
The first time I seen dream theatre I was about 6 ft away from him.
Drinking heinekens of course at the alrosa villa. Was one of the greatest guitar experiences of my life, right up there when I was 4ft away from allan holdsworth, but anyway ....
I'm not sure what these guys are using, but back in the days before guitar modeling, I use to use a boss metalizer in front of my hiwatt tube amp. Basic pedal setup of boss effect, distortion, chorus, flanger .... My hiwatt would be set up to have a clean crunchy sound. When I stepped on the metalizer, all hell would break loose. Getting a good lead solo sound can be quite a pain really.
These days I use the roland vg88 for all my guitar sounds. I find it to be a truly amazing unit. Feel free to have a listen at:
