I don't see this as a "black and white" question nor should the
answer be that cut and dry. To insinuate that these artists do it for the money is to say that they wouldn't do it otherwise. I don't necessarily believe that to be true. At the heart of it, a singer sings or a guitar player plays just like a painter paints; not simply because somebody has offered them huge sums of money, but because they need to satisfy an inner need to express themselves.

Should they be paid for what they do? Of course they should, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't do it otherwise. Maybe yes and maybe no.

Does art only exist when somebody pays to hear it or see it. No, It also exists in the basements of the millions who choose to do it even when no one is there to hear it or pay for it. The artists that you have listed may have been one of those millions were it not for their talent, hard work, timing, connections and (maybe) a lucky break.

Sweetie, there is something called counter culture and pop culture. Have you heard of the term "pop" music? Pop music is akin to pop culture. Pop music is also known as "sell out" music, in other words, the list of Top 40 bands you have posted would certainly be considered "pop", and yes, they do it for $$.

not everyone in pop does it for the money as nothern lights said. out of that bunch, i would say that hilary duff does it for the money and fame. i think that the rest of them really enjoy making music. you can hear it in their music.
