Hey girl,
It takes guts to post your video on this website and ask complete strangers to critique you. Let me just say that I am with a choir in California and I have some experience in music. I think I can help you out a lot.

There are 5 main things to focus on when you sing: facial expressions, concentration, breathing, support, and tone. I know it's a lot, but it will really help you.

Facial Expressions
1. You got this one down. You were really into the song and it made it more interesting. A lot of people have great voices, but they just don't get connected to a song. Good job on this one.

Concentration
I heard that you were a little off key when you were singing that jo jo song. This is alright since you don't have the right technique yet. If you follow my steps, you'll sing in tune more often...

1. concentrate on the notes in your head, instead of blurting out whatever. You went flat a lot in that video. That means that you were just below the notes. For example when you sang, "Get out". When you feel that you are going flat, smile and think up. It's a great trick because even thinking about going up or even going on your tippy toes makes your note go up. Try it.

2. practice with the correct technique in which I will show you in the next paragraphs

Breathing
Before I talk about supporting with your diaphragm, you need to understand how to breathe correctly.
1. In your video, whenever you breathed you lifted your shoulders. This is INCORRECT. Look in front of a mirror and you will see. The correct way to breathe is to expand your stomach. It takes a lot of practice, so don't get discouraged if you don't get it right away. Go in front of a mirror and place your hands on your stomach. If you breathe the right way, your stomach should expand.

2. If you breathe expanding your stomach, you will have to breathe less often, which will improve your sound.

Support
If you watch your video and listen to your sound, you will notice that it is really breathy and throaty. Jo Jo has a beautiful, pure sound because she can support with her diaphragm. This will take practice because its hard to do. Your friend was right because you are not using your diaphragm at all.

1. When you breathe correctly (expanding your stomach) supporting using your diaphragm will be easier so make sure you nail that first
2. When you sing correctly, your diaphragm should tighten like you're doing a sit up. This is your diaphragm supporting your vocal chords. Practice this, but don't force it. It should be a gradual tightening.

Tone
Another way you can get rid of that raspy voice is to improve your tone. If you listen to a great choir, their woman's voice is pure and full, not throaty and airy. Check out the choir I'm in and the song they did last year http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAvPpod6a... and listen to the voice of all of the women. I'm not saying you have to sing like this. I'm saying that these woman are breathing correctly, concentrating, have great facial expressions, and a choral tone. I'm not teaching you how to do a choral tone, but I still think your tone needs improvement. Jo Jo's tone is kind of like the girls in the choir, but Jo Jo is more pop then choral.

1. When you sing, open your mouth so it is vertical. Your mouth should be so open that you will be able to fit three fingers into it length wise, Look at the song the choir sang and how open their mouths are. It greatly improves your sound
2. Another thing that you need to work on is annunciating. I could barely understand what you were singing. Really pronounce the constantants (like K, T, F, B, etc). Sing like you are singing to an almost deaf person.

If you follow my steps, your singing will greatly improve!

Best of luck

the best way to know if you are singing correctly is when you exhale your diaphram will expand in your "belly" and when you exhale, which will give you the force, your "belly" will contract or get smaller.

ok i just watched the video and i can see you are not breathing correctly because i saw your shoulders move when you inhaled which means you are pulling in through your chest.

your stomach will be bigger and you will feel yourself breath in more and sustain your singing longer, also if you breath correctly your voice will be stronger.

Kat mac

put your thumb in your belly button and pronounce CHUH CHUH CHUH! if your thumb moves then you have the proper support. for breathing put your hands on your sides just below the rib cage then take a deep breath. if your shoulders move then your breathing wrong. your hands should be moving out and in when you breathe
as for your voice, watch your tuning. once people start paying attention to it, it usually gets better. and have better breath support but this will improve if you do the breathing excersises i explained. also, your sound seems to be coming through your throat not your diaphram like your friend said. dont worry about being loud, once you start singing from your diaphram you wont have to work on sound loud, it just is. good work
