Okay, so you've already done the first step: deciding on the theme of your song. Now there are other componets you need to figure out.
What do want your song to inspire people to do? Be themselves? Be strong in a tough time in their life? Follow their dreams? And think about the context. Are you going to tell a story with a moral, and is it about yourself or someone else? Or maybe you want the whole song to be directed to audience, using words like "You." and such. Or maybe you want to do the opposite, and say "I" or "We" instead, like maybe you're going through a tough time but you're going to hold on through it all.
Provided that you are writing the music as well as the lyrics, you need to decide on other things. What tempo, what key, what voice range is written for, that sort of thing.
What I ususally do for lyrics is I have a part of the song in my head, a really good line that I want to use in a song, and I work around that. A good way to start is with imagery. Think of a mteaphor for what you want the song to say, a colorful one, so you have a picture in your head that's hopefully similiar to what others will have when they hear the finished product. Then start writing about it. Once you've got one or two lines down, you have something to build on.
An example of the imagery thing-the song Stand in the Rain by Superchic(k). It uses rain as a metaphor for pain and says that if you stand strong, you can get through it.
As for the music, once you have it in your head, try to think if it's a melody you've heard before on the radio or wherever. If it is, you can make sound original. Add some changes here and there. Many contemporary songs have their background in oldies classics, anyway.
Have fun and good luck writing your song!

I usually write about how I am feeling, or about a certian situation I have went through in my life. Of course, you can always write about love, but how old is that really?

try to do heart filled songs. then there is no cussing. and you can make it rock. listen to the song let you go. there is no swearing and it is rock

Honestly, you can just start off with whatever comes to your head first that sounds "pretty."

um....think of something that every relates to...or something really fun...fun things like summer vacation write about things refuring to partys the beach stuff like that!

From-Gunmima!

when I look at your picture
all that I feel
are your loving arms holding me near

though your no longer with me
I'll always need
the remembrance of our love
that was real

You finish it.

DON'T write about dating/girls/the love of your life (since you're not sure what to write about. Only write about that stuff if it's going to come out of you one way or another; then you may as well harness the creative energy).

Write about something interesting that people don't usually write about. (e.g. a Relient K song about Charles in Charge or what it's like to be a horse)... or just carry a notebook with you and write down when you see an interesting/subtle person or situation and write a very poetic version of that...

Write about situations you've been in. And make a list of how you felt and what was happening in that situation. Eventually... turn it into a song. lol. If you can't think of any good situations, MAKE ONE UP! Or, you can wait for the "right time", and when you feel like you can turn a certain emotion or situation you're in at THAT MOMENT IN TIME, into a song,........do that .

=)

just write, and write and write.
Here's some topics...

-lonlyness
-partying, getting wasted, dancing...
-unwanted
-pissed
-city life
-heart break
-revenge
-critism from other people
-school

stuff like that... lol

=D

Pick a song (from another artist) that you would LOVE your song to be kind of like...that will give you some insperation.....also just write down everything that comes to mind, then you can pick out the good parts and leave the bad....just start playing around with it.
