There are so many of these on the market I recommend you just use Google to search:

half-size guitar

and go from there.

By demanding "quality sound and structure" you are willing to pay the dollars involved. This could be an unwise purchase as you don't know how the guitar is going to go over... what if the young person just doesn't want to commit to it? As well, guitars are not intended to get kicked around much, and a pricey one will break just as easily as a cheaper model.

I own a number of these smaller-bodied guitars that I keep around for students, for myself to use out in the yard, at the beach, etc. and can assure you that there is no way tell what kind of quality you'll get unless you spend around $1000. I have one guitar I paid $29 for and a similar one for $99. The cheaper model is not as well built, but sounds and plays better than the more expensive one. That's life.

Guitars are very much like cars... every manufacturer turns out a lemon.

Quality sound and structure both depend on the types of wood used, the craftsmanship employed, and proven luthier methods of assembly. Your best bet is to visit a number of guitar shops, ask for assistance and they can show you what is available. In addition, be willing to purchase a used guitar. You will most likely get more for your dollar. Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions.

One last point... don't be worried about the country in which the guitar was manufactured. I have Japanese, Korean, Czech Republic and Chinese guitars that are ALL on par with each other. The Japanese and Koreans have had a real edge on this market, but the rest are sneaking up on them and generally cost less.

Hope this helps!

well for electric, a Fender Stratocaster is always a great idea. it's a classic, but w/out the ridiculous classic's price. good sound. very cool looking. comes in SOO many colors!!

and what do you mean by 1/2 size?

One you could get is a Dean JTJ Half-Size Steel String Acrostic Guitar. Just a suggestion.....

Try the Breedlove Passport it's an acoustic electric. good size and very good sound not to mention very durable.

Have you checked out the baby Taylor? If you are looking for a quality small scale guitar this is what I would recommend. Even though it's small it still plays and feels like a Taylor.
