Haha, weird, I was listening to him as I clicked on this too.
I'm young, so I haven't grown with him per se, but my uncle is a die hard Billy fan, so I've listened to him my entire life and grown up on him. I honestly own all his cds, plus demos from My Lives, and possibly finally going to a concert next year.
I can't list all the reasons why I like him. To me, he is the complete musician. He's gone through his phases of being in love and happy to angry and a little full of dread, like his masterpiece Nylon Curtain days. His music puts you on the highest of highs for the most part. It's like a roller coaster with him. And through his music he's not afraid to speak his mind and be the person he is. I definitely agree with you that his music drips in soul. To me, it's just got this different feel to it than any other music. He lives through his music, through his piano. He's dedicated. He's loud and outspoken. He's inspiring. And so unbelievably talented. He'll go on his with his riffs in Root Beer Rag and then settle down to Invention in C Minor, Piano Man, whatever. He's just frankly amazing.
becuase he liked the beatles. and anyone who liked the beatles in my book deserves a pat on the back.
He does have a lot of good songs!
I agree except for We Didn't Start the Fire which is just crap. It's like he turned the light switch off for that one.
Because he is the piano man...DUH! He is the best. I love him. And guess what, my uncle looks just like it! Its great...now if only he could sing like him...
LOL
never heard of him
sry, im very ignorant in the music world
His music is a melting pot of various American styles, including pop, rock, jazz, and country, but he somehow makes all of it uniquely his own by giving it his own trademark sound.
He writes about the common man. I think everyone can relate in a personal way to his music.
I love everything from "Angry Young Man" to "Captain Jack"
He is the voice of the working man.
Because he sings music everyone can identify with. He is an amazing song writer. My very first memory of music is singing along to a billy joel song when I was 3 years old. I will always have a special place in my heart for his music.
Billy Joel writes songs that the common person can relate to. Back in the 70's it was youthful angst, in the 80's coming to term with adulthood and the responsibilities that come along with it.

His music always struck a chord with me. It was danceable, singable, thought provoking and just fun!

Thanks for asking that question! Brought back memories!
Man, they only gave me this small box to respond. I grew up with his music. His music has been there through all the stages of my life. I started liking him in about '76 or so when I found out he lived, or did live, in the next town over from me on Long Island. I was only 7 yrs old but there was an instant attraction to his music. It was honest. He was singing songs that I could relate to (see Great Suburban Showdown and New York State of Mind). He admitted to wanting to be a rock singer for the "chicks". I could go on. I saw him last year in Atlanta and I got chills as he played song after song. To this day he is still my favorite.
because it hink his songs rhyme well and the beat is so datchy. The songs are very american and i think he epitomizes a classic rock mixed with relaxing music. I think the subjects of his songs are such that they can touch everyone.

Cuz I'm an uptown girl, and its still rock and roll to me. :)
I like his Rebel Yell.. . . Oh no that's Billy Idol.
He makes the piano so emotional, I mean alot of people, includung him, can have really emotional voices, but very few people can convey emotion through the piano so well.
A huge part of it is also cause he sings about New York alot and it really does feel special if someone's singing about my city.
Well, because all his songs are ripped off from somebody or other and his vocals are unctuous and annoying and the melodies are tame...oh sorry, I thought the question was why I hate him so much.
