Question:

Typically how long does it take an intermediate electric guitarist to learn a challenging song?

Answers: I'd have to know what your definition of "challenging song" is. Let me try to give you an idea: An intermediate electric guitarist should be able to pick up the basic chords from your run-of-the-mill rock and roll song after listening to it four or five times, and if the guitarist in question has some basic skills in playing lead, he/she could learn a simple guitar solo in an hour or two. If you step up to something tougher like, say, an entire Stevie Ray Vaughn song (guitar solos and all), that could take several days of practice. Bear in mind Stevie Ray doesn't play lightning-fast, so if you're talking about a song more along the lines of speed metal an intermediate guitarist may need weeks or months of practice just to get fast enough to play such a guitar solo. Does that give you a rough idea? Source(s):
Guitar player for 30+ years Don't limit it to electric guitars. I've been playing for 50 years and I still stumble over a complicated piece of music... I have one right now that is keeping me humble trying to master it.

There is no answer to your question... it takes as long as it takes and it's different for everyone.
