Jazz Arrangement Tips?!
Question:
Jazz Arrangement Tips?
My school is forming a jazz ensemble next year, and over the summer I am arranging one of my favorite song for jazz band..."Betcha Nickel" by Ella Fitzgerald. If any of you have tips or hints, please give them to me! :D

Thanks, Scherzo and Pinkee. For instrumentation, we aren't sure who will be joining next year, but we do know we will have at least on of each of those sections. I will probably be playing in the band on bass.
Answers:
I agree with 'dkziemann', starting with the low instruments and wide intervals but personally, I dislike the Glenn Miller style. It lacks imagination and innovation.
To add, I have always found that writing the lead parts (i.e., 1st Alto, 1st Tenor, 1st Trumpet, etc.) tends to set a good framework for the remaining parts. I also like to split the Bari sax's time between the reeds and low trombones, especially if there is no Bass Trombone. It adds some punch.
