How do Inde Bands get Record Deals?!

How do Inde Bands get Record Deals?
or do they just make their own stuff? B/C i was looking at the Barnes and Noble shelves and they has a whole corner on Indie Bands, and since they are "independent" how do they make CD's?
Answers:
You don't have to have a record deal to make a cd. Indie implies independent, which would infer that they're without a label. You yourself can record a cd right now, it just costs a lot and you would get very few sales as you don't have a renowned label to back you. Basically you get more publicity with a record deal.
