Question: Does Robert Downey Jr deserve his Oscar Nomination!?
He has been nominated for his role in "Tropic Thunder"
It just feels wrong for a performance from such a light-weight movie to get nominated!.His whole performance is based around him impersonating a black man!.It gets old pretty quickly!.
I felt the same when Johnny Depp got nominated a few years ago for "Pirates of the Carribean"!.

If I had a say so in these matters, I am not sure I would have nominated him for this particular role (I actually liked Tom Cruise better in the film), at least not this year when so many actors turned out really great performances!. However, I definitely think it is a note worthy performance and, from the bunch of films I've seen this past year, one of the most outstanding of 2008, so I am also not entirely opposed to his nomination!. Regarding the worthiness of "lighter" pictures for Oscar, Roger Ebert says "A movie's quality is separate from its subject" and I agree!. I don't think nominations should be exclusively for films centering on more serious subjects or saved only for high drama!. To quote Ebert again, "A film is not good because of what it is about, but because of how it is about what it is about"!. Comedy is hard to do and just as noble and actors working in comedy deserve as much recognition as those working in thrillers and dramas!. We learn a lot about ourselves and our world through satire and parody done right!. Personally, I really think Tropic Thunder is very much a parody done right and it is that because some of the actors work really hard to turn what is basically a caricature into a three dimensional human being!. In that sense, I actually think Downey Jr!.'s nomination is more deserved than Brad Pitt's, who never managed to make his Benjamin Button someone I could emotionally connect with!.
One more thing, the role DIDN'T call for a black actor!. The point of Lazarus is that this is an actor so gung-ho that he would go to the extreme of pigmentation therapy and "loose" himself in this stereotypical character he has created for the movie within Tropic Thunder!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Robert Downey Jr!. absolutely deserves a nod for his work in Tropic Thunder!. He is drop-dead brilliant in every role he has ever undertaken!. (If you've seen him in Restoration, Home for the Holidays, Chaplin, Less Than Zero, etc!., you know what I mean!.) Besides, the Academy should honor comedic roles now and then!. Why always drama!? Comedy is much harder to pull off!. They should change the name to call it the Academy Awards for Drama because that's all they care about most of the time!. Anyone else in that role in Thunder might have been terrible but RDJ nailed it!. You never see a trace of Robert Downey Jr!. in that film, only the two characters he plays (Kirk Lazarus and Lazarus-as-Osiris)!. That was no easy task!. He does just as good a job as Ledger in TDK!. I think Ledger will win the Oscar, but Downey Jr!. absolutely deserved one of the nomination slots!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
see i thought it was a really dirty guy in the movie i did not know that he impersonating a black guy the whole way through the movie i think they should have goten a black guy for the part i dont think whites should impersonate a black person !.no thats not right that he was nominated for an oscar !.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I would agree,no disrespect to downey jr!.But thats a sh*** role that got an oscar nomination!.And he has made a comeback from his drug addiction days!.Ironman was a better freaking role!
