Why did Rhett leave Scarlett in Gone w/ the Wind?!

Answers:
Because when Melanie dies and Scarlett runs to console Ashley; Rhett realizes that despite his best efforts, Scarlett was still in love with Ashley (or so he thought)!. He was broken by that time, with all the problems between he and Scarlett and the death of their only daughter (and later on by Scarletts miscarriage, which he caused when he mistakenly pushed her down the stairs)!. He was tired of trying basically!.
