Anyone from Australia? Was it really that wild at the turn of the 20th century?!

Question: I just saw the movie, "The Proposition" and was amazed at the level of violence. What's with all the flies everywhere, and were they really that cruel to the aborigines?

Answers: I just saw the movie, "The Proposition" and was amazed at the level of violence. What's with all the flies everywhere, and were they really that cruel to the aborigines?

sure was. they were absolutely terrible to the aboriginals.. they had signs for public notice that read : to whom it concerns- men and women, children, animals and forresty, and black ppl- in that order their laws read aswell. so 0 rights.

they would slaughter hundreads because they had naturally klled a kangaroo or something- which the white ppl believed were to be on "their" land and thus was punishable by death of entire tribes.. aboriginals couldnt grasp the idea of "someones land".

..it's strange tho, as the first thing captain cook said to his crew members when meeting them was - they are the true owners and need to be respected as such, we are just visiters here- ...but i guess the convicts got real angry about this and were disgusted that blacks (inferior in their view) could be higher then them convicts... ha.

oh and one last random thing.. aborignials were always consdered inferior..even today.. but really, how could a race that had successfully been conducting bloodtransfusions over 20000years ago be inferior... especially if they had survived fr 40000yrs...and the land was in impeccable condition..unlike us today..

and afraid to say in the bush during summer... the flies are real bad..

(ppsthe govenment has only apologised about their treatment just last month.. lol, really treated them well indeed...)

ps nick, im 22yrs old. the tides are changing and we are becoming less taboo on it.. i know ofcourse that the state of aboriginals today is a result of us taking everyting away from them and forcing them to take on something which was not for them.. today, yesterday and way back then. but we are learning.. australia is a fresh country and we are much less stubborn then many other countries... you should see hungary where i am now... whoa, now that is worse.
getup.com is taking of with this theme too...

Haven't seen the movie, but there are flies everywhere in summer. White people were cruel to the aboriginies in the early days, but all settlers were extremely cruel to natives in all countries. It is a great country, but we don't have much of an interesting history.

Yes of course you dummy!!!![wink] And worse... without the Aborigines many white would have died within a month of the original landing/invasion.

They slaughtered Aborigines... stole their land and children and blame them today for their own ills. Australia has a burgeoning racist attitude - it is taboo to talk about that history it is taboo to teach much of it at any level in any educational environment.

The edu department will only educate Aboriginal youngsters if they can already speak Queens English... and they can't do that unless of course they gain some education... that is their reality TODAY. Disadvantage. It is a continuing educational genocide.

I haven't seen the movie.
Yet I can confirm this:
There are a lot of flies in the Bush--from the cattle droppings, wildlife in droves and carcasses.
"The Aussie Salute" refers to waving off the flies especially in Summer.

Name one colonial power that wasn't barbaric to the natives whose land they claimed for themselves.

What you saw was an accurate representation of country life. City life however was much different.

Flies are a real nuisance during the summer but have been a rare find this year.

Anyone who knows anything about white colonisation knows that the white settlers were extremely cruel to "savages". This includes America, and Africa as well as Australia.
