We aren't told in the film, only that he is "pure evil". In the novelization, more detail is given, leading us to view Michael as possessed by an entity connected to the ancient observance of Samhain. That isn't truly a sound story idea, but I suppose it seemed passable back then.

So, now we have Samhain, Druids and a child sacrifice (?). Yes, I would say that we're in make-believe land. At least they haven't had Michael show up at Stonehenge~yet.

Due to lack of love,attention and always getting bullied...he became fearless and somehow confident. He started to torture animals and also kill them...even takes a picture of them. One day at school...the principal saw the pictures...called his mom...after that....he start killing...(dont want to be a spoiler^^)..
He had a rubbish family life - mother an exotic dancer and step-father was mean to him and deserved to have his throat cut.
