Why are Hollywood movies today unoriginal?!

Question: It seems that mostly every movie is today "based on a true story" or "based on a novel" or "based on the 1972 film" and even "based on a play by...."
Come on! When is Hollywood going to come up with something original and unthought of yet?

I think that will happen when the studios are led by people who want to tell great stories and not accountants. They're too afraid of losing money and so they stick to formulas that have worked in the past so we get nothing but remakes of old films, remakes of popular foreign films, etc.

Now that the holidays are coming up, hopefully there will be some good films in the theaters. They always seem to wait until the end of the year to release the better films so that the Academy will remember them when it comes time for Oscar nominations.

because there in it for the money and to lazy to think up new ones

Because you can be sure of a fan base when you make something unoriginal.

Hollywood movies are so expensive to make these days, it's cheaper to remake a movie that was a hit at one point, than to gamble on making a new movie that's unproven.

Think of it this way, if you had millions invested would you want a return on your investment, or gamble with it and potentially lose millions?

What Hollywood needs to do is invest in smaller filmmakers and film studios, make cheaper films, then market those that take off.

Personally, I think Hollywood is shooting themselves in the foot doing sequels and remakes. People want fresh, new, and fun things to watch.

during the years i think its harder to think of new things there are SOO man movies out over the years....... it VERY hard to be original....

Movies are huge investments, so making a movie that may not have a built in audience is a big risk. That being said, you still see chances being taken, like, the Tarantino/Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse, it bombed but at least they were trying something new. But, everytime they try something like that it just reaffirms ideas to stick to what has got them there.

The book of Ecclesiastes says it best..."The thing that has been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it has been already of old time, which was before us." Ecclesiastes 1:9 & 10. Everything's been done that could be done. All they can do now days is add more violence, special effects and sex (all for shock value). For example, how many times can they sink the Titanic? There are at least 5 different versions of that movie. The only thing that made the last one better is the real shots of the dive that they worked into the movie. Other than that, it was just another leaky boat movie. Nope, there's nothing new under the sun. It's all recycled stories, jazzed up, and dressed down. Hey, even a pig would look good if dressed in a tux! But, it would still be a pig. <*)))><
