Why is Song of the South considered politically incorrect?!

Question:

Why is Song of the South considered politically incorrect?

First off, I haven't seen the movie since I was a small child - I can't remember a lot of it. I wanted my kids to see it so they knew the basis behind Splash Mountain before our Disneyland trip, that's when I found out it had been removed from the shelves long ago.

I understand it is not a positive movie for African Americans....but it IS history and to be taken w/ a grain of salt. I guess I don't "get" what's so bad about a movie that depicts a little bit of history, even if it is unfavorable. We know what's right and wrong in 2007, can't we be trusted with the knowledge we've earned from the mistakes of our ancestors?

Answers:

I saw this at a revival back in the '70's - as I recall the cartooning and the live action/animation interaction was excellent. That said, I think they could preface the movie w/a notice that the movie was a product of its time, as they have done w/the TinTin book that's caught (rightfully) so much flack.

The Tom & Jerry cartoons were sometimes godawfully racist, as was the Mickey Rooney character in Breakfast at Tiffany's. It doesn't make it right; it is, however, a harsh reminder of our not too distant past.

The women are still up for auction in the Pirates ride at Disney. Take a wench for a bride sounds so much better than take a wench for a night or two.
