its a baseball game ive heard it different but its the ump and the catcher.
My first reaction was to the word home. Because usually in describing a situation you state the subject and then something about that subject- in this case : "There was a man" and `he was headed home'. But you don't say `headed home' and instead say "running toward home" - which made me think of baseball. The riddle could be about baseball, in which case the masked men at home were the other teams catcher and the home base umpire.
