She wrote the song when she was sixteen, and it has to do with the troubles in her family and she's said spontaneously in interviews that almost everyone can relate to this song and parents especially come up to her and tell her how the song has really moved them. For Kelly, it had to do with when she was younger and her parents divorced when she was just six years old and it's about her dealing with the trauma of that.
The music video is showing a young Kelly taking her present, older self back in time through the sadness of her family's situation. It really moved me when I saw it, so if you haven't seen the video, please do.

She wrote the lyrics when she was 16 to deal with pain she felt because of her family and supposedly the music video is a reenactment of some actual events that occurred in her household when she was growing up. She even received her parents permission to present them in the music video.

Before Kelly parents divorced they used to agrue and fight a lot. Kelly would hear her mom in the other room crying. Her parents reached a point in their marriage where they just werent getting along any more. After they divorced Kellys brother Jason went to live with their father in California. Kellys sister Alyssa went to live with an aunt in North Carolina whilst Kelly stayed in Texas with her mom. Kelly and her siblings grew up in divided household after their parents divorce. The family was divided. So that had a big effect on Kelly. Because of You is about the trauma of dealing with her parent divorce and all. Sad story
