Can somebody please tell me why we are switching to DTV?!

Because analog TV uses a huge chunk of the wireless spectrum and does so very inefficiently!. There's a limited amount of space available, and it's filling with cell phones, wifi and various wireless devices!. Digital TV uses a smaller amount of the spectrum and is much more efficient!. Switching with free up a huge chunk of the spectrum for other uses, both military and civilian!.
