It was season 3 episode 15 "walk on water"
and is the first part of a 3 part story
merideth falls into the sea accidently when a man who she is trying to help has a seizure and pushes her over the egde of the boat, the little girl who witnessed it is too shocked by the accident she does not go to seek help, in the end derek finds her drowning in the ocean and jumps in to save her,
then during the next two episodes we see merideth in limbo, and we are unsure whether she is going to die or live, but then meanwhile mer's mother goes into cardiac arrest and dies
it goes back to merideth in limbo and she sees her mother who tells her to go back "away from the light" and then we know she lives as christina refuses to stop trying to ressusitate her, they find a heartbeat after everyone was ready to call her time of death

I think that's the third series!. She gets rescued by McDreamy and takes about 3 episodes to gain consciousness again!
