To those of you watching Grey's Anatomy, does the storyline between the two !

Question: To those of you watching Grey's Anatomy, does the storyline between the two lesbian doctors bother you!?
Does it make you uncomfortable!? The network is really portraying the sexual tension between them very strongly, with kissing, fondling, etc!. Is this appropriate for television!? What effect will this have on kids watching it!? I welcome your comments, thoughts, opinions, etc!. My wife and I have been talking about this, since our young son has often walked into the room unexpectedly!. Please no hateful responses!. I pose the question for some honest dialogue!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
I'm a lesbian and a teacher and a fan of Grey's!.
I wouldn't avoid watching the show because he might walk in!. They say one in ten people is gay or lesbian!. Chances are, your son already has some ideas on the subject!.

Whether you are okay with relationships like this in real life or not, if he did walk in, I would use it as an opportunity to discuss your family values with him, and explain that sometimes people watch shows like Grey's because they are about things out of the ordinary, which makes them interesting, but might not necessarily be something you'd actually want to do or see in real life!.

Depending on how young he is, he might not even realize what's going on!. Personally, if I had a child, I would want them to understand that all people are different and kids (like him) come from all different cultures, backgrounds, religions, and families!. And I'd also want him to be accepting of these differences while maintaining his own family values!.

Little accidents like him walking in on things like two women kissing on TV really open up the floor for good, real-life conversations about your own values and the values of others!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

the topic has been handled with humor, and the dialogue has been very smart!. I don't think a young child would even understand most of it, but as with any other late night television, it is up to parents to keep their kids out of the room when questionable things are on!. Personally I think the comment above mine about Yang "going down" on someone is more outright graphic than Dr!. Baily talking about "the cuisine down south"!.
It is sad that people can be so closed minded about sexuality!. You try to sheild your child from the affections of 2 people, and end up creating another person as judgemental as yourself!. The world has enough of those peopel already!. You should use the plotline as an opportunity to teach your child to accept people for what they are, even if they aren't just like you!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I watch the show with my 11 year old each week, she wants to be a surgeon one day!. I never gave conversations about lesbians much thought until we watched these episodes and I began hearing things such as "Oh that is just so wrong, eww" and such out of my daughter's mouth!. So it has opened my eyes to the negative feedback she is receiving through school and or her dad(my ex) on alternative lifestyles and consequently made me realize I need to inform and educate her toward a more accepting attitude!. So my view is you can't shelter your kids, you need to know how they perceive things and then you need to open up some dialogue as well!. The show has handled the subject matter very tactfully!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I don't see a problem with it!. They don't show any more sexuality between those two women than they have ever shown between hetero couples!. There should be no difference!. Many people feel uncomfortable with things they are unfamiliar with!. Often TV teaches us about poorly understood real-life situations - sexuality, pregnancy, mental illness, divorce!.!.!. If you get used to seeing it and maybe learn something from watching it on TV, maybe people will be more accepting of it in real life!. We should not be judgemental or discriminatory!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I guess I'm made slightly uncomfortable by it!. No, it doesn't interest me, but I have this convoluted philosophy about the show -- showing us lesbian sex, but having a homosexual actor ("George") playing the part of a heterosexual man!. Somehow that hints to me they've written this in for its shock value (not that it is shocking but it's "in your face") and perhaps even its ratings!. Still love the show, but not very much of it has been completely believable lately!. Looking forward to Christina and that soldier!Www@Enter-QA@Com

no it doesn't bother me because it is what is going on in people's life!. i mean, i understand that it may not be what some people believe is right (i myself do not approve of lesbian/gay relationships) but it is just a television show that has to appeal to a broad spectrum of people!. and i just started watching the show this season so it's not such a big deal that it makes me want to turn!. to my knowledge they haven't really been too explicit in what they show!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

No, I see it on tv and in real life sometimes and it doesn't bother me!. Its good, it opens up people's eyes I think and gets them to think about it more!. I personally think that there shouldn't be hate, I think love should be free and not be judged!. Gender shouldn't matter, its the person, the personality that should matter!. Love is kind, free, and wonderful, everyone should get to experience it however they want too!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think it shows that same sex relationships are okay, it doesn't bother me!.
My opinion is it is a way to integrate i guess you could say the gay community into society and have them be accepted instead of put down just like the blacks were!. It's a shame they have to do it on TV but if it's the only way for them to be accepted, i say RIGHT ON!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I'm fine with it!. We need more hot female couplings on network shows!.

also, there needs to be proof that lesbians can have dreamy, unrealistic expectations about relationships and long, awkward pauses in their conversations!.!.!.that's what Grey's Anatomy is about, right!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Doesnt bother me at all!.!.!. It's life, they will see it on the streets if not on a t!.v show!. Its 2008 and just now being accepted by more and more people everyday, so I would say its no different than the sexual content between a male & female on the show!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I don't know, it doesn't bother me personally and i'm 14!.

I think they have wiitten it very cleverly, the only problem i have is Erica annoys me so much I was well upset when i found out she was a series regular now!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It didn;t really bother me until the last episode where she wanted direction on how to go down there!. I thought that was the most sexually graffic thing on the whole show so far!. I mean you don't see Yang asking grey how to go down there on a guy!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The effect it will have on kids is that they will see same-sex couples as just as loving as opposite sex couples!. It's not a big deal!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I have no problem with it!.!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I love Grey's Anatomy because they are not afraid to show and talk about reality!. There are millions of gay couples all around the world, and I think it's great to show them on Television in a positive light!. I am not gay, but I think we should all be tolerant and open-minded!. You cannot possibly disapprove of two people who love each other just because they are same sex!. There are many same-sex couples that are absolute morons, yet they are allowed to be together!. Kids shouldn't be watching this anyways it's TV-14!. So if a child is watching it, and for some reason is affected negatively, why blame the network!? They warned it's not for children under 14, blame the parents not watching them!. If anything, the parents could even use this as an example to become kind, tolerant people!. Minus the sexual stuff of course, that something kids shouldn't be exposed to until they mature or start thinking about becoming sexually active!.
I think that you could use this as an opportunity to talk to your child about gay couples, and tell him that being gay is personal, and should be respected and not ridiculed!. It's one thing if you don't approve, but it's only mature and adult-like to let your son see what is going on in the real world, inform him, and let him form an opinion on his own when he's ready!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
