No I actually don't think he's a chav!. I think there's a difference between someone who looks a bit rough and has had a rough life to a chav!.
Chavs - and there are a lot round where I live - are basically complete no-hopers without any real plans for their lives!. They live in council flats, breed endlessly and collect their Giro cheques every week!. The fake Burberry and PlayBoy is also worth a mention!. I hate chavs with a deep-rooted passion!. They're disgusting!.
Jay is not a chav!. He's just rough, which isn't that uncommon in that area of London! But the kid has passion! He cares deeply for those he's close to, and over the years, almost everyone he cared about has either left him or died!. That's pretty tough for anyone to come to terms with, let alone someone of Jay's age!.
Think about what he'll be like in a few years time, if the character is still there!. I don't imagine him turning into a waster or a psycho like Sean!. I imagine him being a real cheeky chappy with an eye for the ladies, possibly with his own market stall!. I imagine him being very much like that new guy who likes Stacey, Callum!.
He'll probably turn into a really decent guy who will hopefully find a lovely girl and settle down!. He's a real family person, and he'll always take care of those that matter to him!. That's not generally the type of behaviour displayed by a chav!. In fact, chavs are usually so out of it that they rarely display any form of behaviour whatsoever, except maybe to attack an old lady for her pension money when the White Lightning's all gone!.
