There are going to be a series of 5 specials released over the next year-ish, all with David Tennant as the Doctor!.
The first is this year's Christmas Special!. Then there are 4 more next year, with one being released around Easter and another Christmas Special!.
This year's special has already been filmed!. The title is The Next Doctor, and it features the Cybermen!. There has been 1 or 2 brief promos, and it looks like it's going to be in the 40s!. David Morrissey is the title character, and man the Doctor meets who also claims to be the Doctor!. One of the rumored castings is Albert Finney as Winston Churchill!.
Not much is known about the other 4 specials!. Some of the directors have been announced!.
This schedule is partly due to budgetary constraints and partly to allow a new creative team to take over!. Stephan Moffat (who has written The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink and Silence in the Library/Forrest of the Dead) is taking over from Russel T!. Davies as the show's executive producer!.
David Tennant is confirmed through the specials, but nothing has been announced as to if he will be back for the next full season, which will be shown in 2010!. If they are going to change doctors, we may hear something early next year, because the producers will need to cast someone for the regeneration, which would happen at the end of the Christmas special!.
David Tennant has reportedly made his decision, but no one outside a few people at the BBC knows what it is!. (Although, there was a commentary on a DVD or an interview where he refers to Stephan Moffat as his new boss!.)
