Two ladders short of an elopement?!

Question: Two ladders short of an elopement!?
In Red Dwarf - Demons and Angels - Lister says "You guys are two ladders short of an elopement!."
Originally I thought this to be "two letters short of an allotment!."

Does anyone know what this means!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

The traditional view of an elopement, is of a guy going up to a girl's window with a ladder and carrying her away to marry in secret (usually at Gretna Green)!. If the guy was a bit more clever, he would take two ladders!. One for him to climb up and knock the window, and another for her to climb down along with him - he wouldn't want to hurt his back before the wedding, would he!?

So, a guy who was stupid enough to try and elope with a girl in the dead of night without taking any ladders with him would be "Two ladders short of an elopement"

That seems pretty close to Lister's style of reasoning I reckon!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
