It's not real at all!. They try to give you the idea that they just start the camera rolling!. But TV production is very expensive, and a lot is riding on prime-time TV!. If a program doesn't draw enough viewers, the network stands to lose millions of dollars in ad revenues!. So everything is very carefully planned and contrived!.
I would say 90-95% of it is contrived in one way or another!. They tell people what to say!. They pick contestants based on dynamics and interaction, and they eliminate them the same way, keeping the unpopular ones to give you someone to root against!. They coach people on what to say!. They plan ahead of time how things will come out!. And the do what they can to create a sense of suspense, sometimes even an artificial one!.
My sweetie loves dancing and she's always right there in front of the set for So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars!. And while the actual dancing on these programs is sometimes very good and worth watching, that's only about 5% of the program!. The rest is all bullsh*t, dancers clowning around in rehearsal rooms, interacting with each other in ways that look fake, and suspense-filled judging!. She calls me into the room to see if there's a good dance, she rewinds the TIVO and shows it to me!. But if you could just watch the actual dancing you could save a lot of time!
Even the audiences in these shows, they cheer all through a performance, and you know real audiences don't do that!. And when they cheer you hear thousands of people when there are only a few dozen people actually there!. They hold up signs encouraging different dancers and though the signs are all different colors and styles, they are all suspiciously the exact same size!.
