i thought the doctor only wanted them as companions and there was an almost rule (atleast in the old, true episodes, not saying these ones arent good, love em!!) that he just didnt love any of them and was very content with having them as his companion, but nothing more!. I believe he did explain this to donna at the begining of this series!.
